National Fragile X Awareness Day

July 22 was recognized as National Fragile X Awareness Day in by the US Senate in 2000 to celebrate those impacted by Fragile X syndrome and raise support for research, education, and awareness.

The most common intellectual disability, Fragile X Syndrome is caused by a mutation of the FMR1 gene. Not everyone with the condition exhibits symptoms, but men are impacted more than women. It is a leading inherited cause of intellectual disability, affecting approximately 1 in 7,000 males and 1 in 11,000 females. Although there are treatments including therapies, interventions, and medication, there is no cure. The syndrome does not affect life expectancy regardless of symptoms.

Fragile X Syndrome can cause intellectual disasbility, behavioral and learning challenges, and various physical characteristics. Some of the most common symptoms include Attention Deficit Disorder or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, being very social, sensory disorders, learning disabilities, elongated face and ears, soft skin, and connective tissue problems impacting ears, feet, joints and palate.
