A New York Times article dated July 25, 2025, reported that the White House has announced the release of $5.5 billion in federal education funds that were previously frozen by the Trump administration. These funds are part of nearly $7 billion authorized by Congress and had been withheld since June 30, 2025, leading to significant disruptions for school districts. The newly released funds include over $2 billion aimed at teacher training and recruitment, especially in low-income areas. This decision came in response to bipartisan pressure, including from ten Senate Republicans, as well as legal challenges from 24 states and the District of Columbia, who contended that the withholding of funds was illegal. Additionally, $1.3 billion for after-school programs was released on July 18, 2025, leaving around $5.5 billion still frozen prior to this announcement. JC Bowman, the executive director of Professional Educators of Tennessee, remarked that “the move was expected and hopefully districts will use the money as it was intended.”
