Sports are an integral part of a community and often the lifeblood of a school. Sometimes that gets lost in our education system. Music, art, and other key areas are also important. However, one issue needs more discussion: sports, an extension of K-12 education.
Tennessee’s high school football competition is divided, and the reason is clear—some private schools do not trust the TSSAA postseason to be fair. The schools are not withdrawing from the association; rather, they are opting out of the playoff route and raising concerns that the game at the top no longer reflects the fairness and integrity that should characterize school sports.
After the TSSAA released its 2027–29 classifications on September 22, Christ Presbyterian Academy, Father Ryan, Memphis University School, Christian Brothers, Chattanooga Christian, Mt. Juliet Christian Academy, and Clarksville Academy chose independent, non-region football schedules for 2027 and 2028. They can build their own seasons and play in a bowl game, but they cannot compete for a TSSAA championship.
No school objected to the rule, but they did object to a system that threatens the fairness and the spirit of community in high school sports.
Christ Presbyterian Academy noted that boarding schools can enroll students from across the country and abroad, giving them an advantage over day schools. Paul Davis of Father Ryan also said that too many programs today fail to match the association’s dedication to putting student-athletes first.
Pete Sanders, headmaster of Memphis University School, explained the distinction between relational coaching and simply replacing players. Christian Brothers maintained that success should be judged by the kind of men its students become, not by the games they win.
The evidence supporting those statements is not very philosophical. Baylor and McCallie have won all the Division II-AAA titles since 2019 and have met in the final match in each of the past three seasons. Eventually, a competitive imbalance stops being just a theory and shows up in the trophy case.
NIL’s existence isn’t the issue. The problem is not the transfer rule by itself; it is what happens when NIL money, easier transfers, recruiting, boosters, boarding capacity, and unequal resources all operate together.
It enables certain schools to attract experienced talent instead of having to develop it themselves. Although college football is already similar to professional sports, except for the salary caps and drafts that professional leagues have to maintain uncertainty, high school shouldn’t be forced to take the same route just because others have concluded that it leads to money.
In Tennessee, school sports are still meant to be an extension of education; it is harder to justify that principle when rosters seem more like recruitment strategies than plans for student development.
That has changed. In February, Governor Bill Lee approved a one-time transfer law that took effect on July 1, and the TSSAA Legislative Council revised its bylaws in April. A student may transfer once between school years and then becomes immediately eligible, provided they meet the other conditions—academic standing, age, recruiting status, tuition payment, and financial aid. A second transfer usually results in the loss of a season unless a hardship exception is awarded.
In mid-August, the TSSAA processed 750 first-time transfers in 2026, compared with 581 in the corresponding period of 2025. Executive director Mark Reeves said this increase was not alarming. Perhaps he is right, but volume alone does not resolve the issue. A transfer can be legal yet still mark the final stage of a recruitment process that began months earlier with a promise, a contract, or a financial arrangement that is hard for people outside the school to see.
The provision allowing this was abolished in 2025, at least to stop boarding schools from gaining a competitive edge by making it possible for students who live far away to become eligible immediately. This measure addressed one advantage, but it did not get rid of the boarding system, since that system still enables schools to recruit from a significantly wider geographic and economic area than regular day schools.
This does not imply that anyone is acting in bad faith. Boarding schools follow the rules as written, while day schools use the options their bylaws permit. The TSSAA is trying to keep its classification system in place even though schools now operate under more varied economic and recruiting circumstances. That does not have to be seen as corruption; it is simply what change looks like before a new course is taken, or indeed before it is given a name.
On October 1, the Board of Control decided to freeze Division II rather than transfer any additional programs into that division to fill the vacancies. Currently, Division II-AAA comprises eight schools: Baylor, McCallie, Brentwood Academy, Briarcrest, Ensworth, Knoxville Catholic, Lipscomb Academy, and Montgomery Bell Academy. The appeal by Chattanooga Christian to be placed in Division II-AA was rejected, and Nashville Christian offered to move up from Division II-A.
Freezing Division II may provide short-term stability but could erode community trust and school reputations if underlying issues of fairness and resource imbalance remain unaddressed. Recent policy changes, such as transfer laws and classification shifts, directly affect fairness and integrity in high school football and undermine the core values of student development and sportsmanship.
Competitive balance does not lead to equal results; it maintains the idea that competition is fair and unbiased. Most importantly, it ensures that the students are representative of the schools they come from rather than being recruited so that they can play sports for those schools.
After trust has vanished, the trophy matters less than the public thinks, and the schools leaving might not be the last to go. What, or who, is next?
